Scratchboard is fun and VERY forgiving as a medium...but I'm not that great at it yet :/. My main problem, is I tend to lose where the original sketch is on the scratchboard, and end up winging it.
Thinking of turning Toby into a girl, because I think the character makes more sense as one, and I like the idea of having a leading heroine.

I think the way you drew in the eyes is just lovely. They even have a wet shine to them :)

Definitely try out scratch board if you can! The only downside is that the materials are sort of expensive (a single scratchboard is like $10 USD), and that you can replicate the effect in photoshop or illustrator, I'm sure.
