This image took me a lot longer than it should have! I did finally teach myself how to use the pen tool in photoshop, with which this was inked (and I will NEVER go back to my old method!).

It went through a digital painting phase, which I finished halfway and scrapped it, played around with other coloring methods some, and then settled with cel-shading and added highlights with a low-opacity/flow brush.

There's quite a few things I'm displeased with. Overall not my favorite work but I am finishing this up so I can move on.

Star Trek: The Next Generation
(I've only seen a few eps, but I must have watched a hundred funny clips and edits on youtube!)

Just testing out the "figure eight" idea that Silver teaches us in lesson 2...in space! Nothing too serious. When I draw cute characters like this, there's always a part of me that really wishes I could develop them further and do something real with them- children's books and comics, for instance.

spent part of today learning to draw horses, which gives me a great excuse to draw one of the more awesome mythical creatures out there: a horse with a man torso for a head. Truly a genius invention.

For this week's project project for my Stephen Silver class, we have to begin to create jekyll-and-hyde characters with our own twist (ie: as spacemen, or something). I am soooo tempted to do a centaur twist, but I don't want Stephen Silver to know how goofy I am ...

very quick sketchy roughs for Summer, the narwhal noodle pony. She's been a huge challenge for me, but I finally feel like I've got something I can work with. Right now I'm just getting a feel for the general design and personality...I'll spend more time on sketches of her once I feel more comfortable with who she is.

My first assignment for the Stephen Silver class, to draw a character based on a description given. This is one of those assignments given just so the instructor can get a feel for your skill level so as to better work with you. I'm so excited for the lessons to come!

I'm finishin' it!

I posted this tight rough in Jon Ponikvar's forum, The Inking Room, for some critiques (I'm already expecting to have to add Hanten's right foot, lol), and I'll be working on it for the next couple of days to finish it. I am not sure yet how I plan to color it- I kind of like simple flat colors and cel-shading, but I might challenge myself with something new. Anyway, next time you see this image, it'll be digitally inked and (at least) flat-colored :).
